i was going to do an encoding of the Appleseed movies. here are some comapares of both blurays. the japanese version is darker than the usa version & has brighter colors. the usa version has more details in the darker scene of compare 1 & softer colors. Just looking for some info on what you think.

Japanese | American

^Did the fourth set of screenshots get interchanged? In the rest of them, the Japanese version looks a little brighter, while in the fourth set, the American version looks brighter.

I'd personally recommend the US version; It's a lot easier on the eyes. Either way, looking forward to it!

Japanese version is over contrasted which leads to all the issues seen (darker areas with loss of detail, brighter colors, etc).
R1 is definitely a better choice for this.

Hello Dragon80, imho the colours in the US version seem a bit washed out, althought there seems to be more detail in the darkened areas wheras in the Japanese images the colours seem more vibrant though there seem to be a quiet a bit of detail loss in the darker areas.
So sorry I'm going to be no help...((+_+))
Conundrum, like the colour aspect of the Japanese version, but then like the higher details in the darker areas in th US version.
You pick...in the end you're the one that has to be happy with what you've produced.

+1 to the R1 release, for reasons already stated by others.

i went with the US release of the movie. it just looks better to my eyes. the 720p version has both english 5.1 dub's & japanese 5.1 & 2.0 commentary with a bitrate of 4,687Kbps. wil post here when the tracker is up and running.

It must make it such a annoyance for encoders having to go though all the versions.

American is slightly better looking. I find it strange that the difference is so noticeable. If I were encoding this I would filter the american to match the japanese and then set the strength to 50% to get an averaged the result.

If only it were so easy. -_-

But R1 and R2 releases often look radically different from one another.

These things really depend on the studios releasing content, but I've found that R2 releases tend to be superior, since they come directly from the Japanese studio producing the show. R2 volumes, for instance, tend to only have two or so episodes each, meaning they can be very high quality, whereas R1 volumes will often cram as many episodes onto each disc as possible. The packaging is also typically superior in R2 volumes, but they're also notably more expensive.

To illustrate this, I found a comprehensive R1 BD release of Clannad for $50 on Amazon, and a comprehensive R2 BD release on Play-Asia for $774. >_>

How so? The Japanese version actually has a lot of lost details because of the additional contrast which is most prominently seen in the 3rd set of shots where an entire corner is blacked out in the Japanese version.
