Just wondering how you guys feel about the new Macbook Pro w retina display.

I plan on ordering one and here are
my specs:

With the following configuration: •2.6GHz Quad-core Intel Core i7, Turbo Boost up to 3.6GHz•16GB 1600MHz DDR3L SDRAM •512GB Flash Storage •Backlit Keyboard
The only things I'm not happy about are the price and personal customization

I feel that it's a complete and utter waste of money. I posted this in another thread, but there's damn near no point in having a display resolution that large. To quote myself:

"It would put some insane stress on your GPU to play video games at 2880x1800 (if it's even supported), and 1080p video would be relatively unimpressive. Sure, you have more workable screen space which would be really useful for things like graphic design, but if you were serious about that then you wouldn't be working off a laptop in the first place."

I agree with 13ack.Stab on this - it seems a bit of an overkill. I have only ~720p on 15' and it looks decent, having 1080p should be enough for pretty much everything unless You are going to use specific software that needs and supports 2880x1800 resolution.
Also: "Apple has packed all the things we hate into one beautiful little package. On top of being glued together, the new MacBook Pro is virtually non-upgradeable—making it the first MacBook Pro that will be unable to adapt to future advances in memory and storage technology." so You need to get everything at first to make sure it endures test of time.
Generally, I only would buy any Apple product if money would be falling out of my pockets. If You like the OS there are ways to install it into standard PC, but hardware can be bought for less $.

Ya, most people do not realise there are ways to get it on other systems.

Don't take our words to decide about Your plans. If You are going to do a lot of graphical work and You have money to spend, it might not be so bad idea. Anyway it's best to wait for review from someone who has bought the product before deciding.
I like to tweak and modify systems that I work on (I also don't have money), so Mac is no good for me, but it might be perfect for many others.

My thoughts are spend the money on a PC laptop, not only will you be able to get a very good laptop your also be spending less money.

Who plays games on a mac? if he really cared about playing games he would buy a desktop pc with windows 7 not only would he save money he would be able to get a better build as well.

Well, sure, but the OP was asking about the Macbook Pro.

What you said about games also applies to graphics design/CAD/etc -- who does these on a laptop?

I feel that MAC's should be used for video editing and graphical designs and that's all they are really good at tbh. IMO

Or you could just get the same graphical design programs and video editing software and run it on a windows system... It has little to do with the OS but rather the hardware limitations. And as backstab said, why do it on a laptop (if you are serious about it i.e is your job)

Freeman, are you going to be mainly running OS X or Windows on that thing?

If you're going to be using Windows a lot you probably won't have the best user experience on it.

I already have to squint sometimes with my laptop that has a 13" 1080p screen.

1920x1080 on a 13.1" screen seems to be 168ppi and the MBP w/RD is something like 220ppi and Windows doesn't do dpi scaling very well.

I have had the same Macbook for like 5 years and I have never found another laptop I like more (except the newer versions). Mac laptops are tha-bomb.

I personally wouldn't go near a Mac (yes, I am Mac hater). For a laptop to have that kind of screen though is impressive. Still not worth buying it, even if you are a professional. There are cheaper, more viable options out there.

Not all third-pary applications support the higher resolution. Okay framerate in recent games at good graphics and the highest resolution. Although full resolution exposed to games, it's not exposed to the desktop.

Damn, I'm going to need my glasses to read stuff at that resolution.

I think it's too expensive for most ways you'd be using it.

Well from what I been reading, the new macbook sucks when it comes to repairing it. Apparently it's pretty much if your Macbook is broken and you're out of warranty then goes in the trash. LOL

the reason being apple made it that way is so that no one but the apple people can fix it, that way no one mess with the system, that is my take on it
